Venice History Surfboard

Studio of Environmental Architecture was invited to contribute a custom surfboard to the Venice Art Walk, with proceeds benefiting the Venice Family Clinic.

The board was shaped by Jeffrey Sudzin of Om Surfboards and glassed by Dan Cobley of DANC Surfboards. Designed by Carson Leh, the graphic concept draws inspiration from the iconic slide-photo assemblages of Charles and Ray Eames, often displayed throughout their Washington Boulevard studio.

The surfboard features a collage of archival images celebrating the rich cultural history of Venice Beach, including its landmarks, artists, designers, musicians, surfers, rebels, and community figures across multiple decades. A large-format printed graphic on gōji paper was laminated beneath the fiberglass, an innovative technique that attracted considerable attention from fellow board shapers and craftsmen at the event. The first board was auctioned during the Venice Art Walk, raising nearly $1,000 for the Venice Family Clinic. A second edition was on display in the lobby of SEA's office at 57 Market Street in Venice, California.
