Vernon House
This two-story residence in Venice Beach, California, is a 3,477-square-foot single-family home on a 4,800-square-foot lot. It was designed with an emphasis on sustainable luxury and refined craftsmanship.
The architecture prioritizes seamless indoor–outdoor connections with floor-to-ceiling pocket sliding glass doors opening onto a lap pool and an Ipe-wood deck, and the material selections balance durability, warmth, and sustainability. The ground floor features an open plan with a central kitchen anchored by a 17-foot walnut island and Dacor appliances, complemented by a pass-through pocket window for exterior dining. A flexible glass-walled studio with a separate entrance provides adaptable space for work or recreation.
Upstairs, each bedroom is designed with private patios, custom walnut built-ins, and en-suite baths. The primary suite extends to a 300-square-foot landscaped deck, with a bath incorporating Calcutta marble, leathered quartzite, and travertine stone. Natural light is maximized throughout, including an operable skylight in the primary bath.
Sustainable systems and detailing extend to the rooftop, where a sauna and cold plunge are integrated into a deck designed for passive cooling and ocean breezes with 360-degree views. This project reflects a holistic approach to sustainable luxury, integrating performance, material integrity, and architectural clarity within a compact urban lot.
